I used to take sitar lessons because I loved the sound of the instrument. Then I began experimenting and wrote some pop songs with it. Here’s one from a few years ago, called Wear the Sad Out.

Sadly, I haven’t picked up the instrument since then. I suspect that I needed to feel completely at home in Los Angeles before I started studying again. On Tuesday, I have my first lesson scheduled—and I’m scared that I forgot everything I know. My teacher taught me ragas—which, roughly explained, are melodic frameworks of hymns from the Vedas, the Hindu sacred scripture from over 3,000 years ago. I’ll get into this more in later posts because they’re complex to describe. During lessons, my teacher played what her guru in India taught her, and I’d play it back to her until I got it right. I’m looking forward to feeling comfortable with the instrument again so I can write more songs.
