I love it when I’m working on a project and in the process, I learn things about my family history that I never knew.

March 18, 2018

One of my forthcoming pieces is about how I recreated Sunday Dinner for family here in Los Angeles—and it’s been a great reason to catch up with my grandmother’s surviving sister, Caprice, who has been regaling me with details of her childhood—such as how they crushed grapes withbaseball bats to make chianti. This piece will be in the Food & Dining section of The Washington Post this spring. I’ve been looking for photos to accompany the piece and found this one—of Sunday Dinner at the old house in Baltimore where my grandmother grew up. Can you feel the joy in this photo? I would have loved to have met my great-grandparents, Colergero and Carmella, and have sat around the table with them all afternoon, eating pasta and drinking wine
