One of the reasons I write is to find moments of clarity. Many writers say you should know where you’re going at the onset of a project. And with shorter pieces, I often do. But with these longer ones, once I let go and let the story write, I am surprised by where I end up and by what I learn. One of my favorite words is “anagnorisis,” which in Greek means recognition. Writing, for me, is continuous, resolute movement toward uncovering what is true.
